They were the workers, foremen and engineers hired in England for the construction of the railroad in our country who, starting from 1879, they began to introduce the golf in the Argentina.

In that year, the Scottish Henry Smith arrived to the port of Buenos Aires with a bag of golf sticks in his baggage. When arriving to the Customs it was wrapped in a surrealist situation that, with the step of the time, he became a very amusing anecdote. Smith that was retained in the port, counted because the employee customs officer didn't finish understanding for what reason they served those sticks of wooden stick and iron heads. He believed to notice a certain aggressive and vaguely mysterious power in them, since, as Smith could understand - that then knew very few words in Spanish -, the official thought that they were weapons of war and he wanted to confiscate them.

The first courts

Another Scotsman, Valentine G. G. Scroggie, played the first match of golf of which one has knowledge in our country, March of 1892, 13 in the square of San Martin's town. With the result that it considers it to him the father of this sport in the Argentina. Starting from the interest that woke up the discipline in the nurtured British colony the San Martin Golf Club it was founded in the neighborhood of Belgrano whose primitive golf field (the first one built in South America) it was a fallow full with wells, to which it was necessary to clean of pastizales and overgrowths to match the land. In that same year the primitive court of the Hurlingham Club, and the following year it was built, in 1893, that of the Hills Athletic Club. Both were clubs been founded previously for the practice of traditionally British sports. Although the San Martin that then gave origin to the San Andrés, the oldest club is considered, Hills were pioneer in the organization of competitions. In their court the first tournament was played later for ladies and two years, the 15 and 16 of August of 1895, golfers of both banks of the River Plate disputed in the Hills Athletic Club the First Amateur Championship of the River Plate.

The tournament became the Argentinean Championship of Fans and it was the first competition organized in Latin America in an absolutely private way by the club headquarters.

At the end of the XIX century, the golf had hardly tossed roots in the Argentina and era exclusive property of the Englishmen. Probably Juan Dentone was the only professional of born golf in the country that exercised as such in the Hills A. C. In Buenos Aires four golf clubs they only existed, one in Montevideo and another in the interior (Rosario Golf Club), and they maintained among them a flowing communication.

The rules in the beginning

Each club regulated its internal competitions and it awarded the handicap to its partners, but if the intention was to promote a championship that granted a title of "national" character, annually it was necessary a minimum organization, or at least, a previous meeting of all the clubs to determine the conditions of the competition.

Before being played the edition of 1896 a meeting that had the presence of the main clubs they began with some basic rules of the sport

In 1897, The was founded River Amateur Plate Championship Executive that took to its position the organization of the championship, adopting the Match Play like its game system.

This way, this sport began to grow, as a result of the increase of the number of clubs and of the sudden interest of the high Buenos Aires society to practice it.

In 1904, the Buenos Aires Golf Club organized the first tournament for professionals. There were only five participants (four of the Argentina and one of the Uruguay), but the idea of carrying out an open championship was floating in the air.

In 1905 the first genuinely Argentinean club was born (the Golf Argentinean Club), and three years later, began to be disputed the tournaments interclubs. With running of the years, new clubs were born and the competitions increased. It was necessary to adopt and to interpret the golf rules that arrived from the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews, and it was necessary to unify the handicaps. necesario unificar los handicaps.

The beginnings of the AAG

The number of clubs continued growing and in consonance also the competitions; it was necessary to interpret the Rules of Golf that arrived from Saint Andrews; and, also, it was necessary to unify the handicaps, so that the player partner of several clubs showed the same one in all them. Also you imperious tornaba that all the handicaps was calculated on the same base.

It was Alberto Of the Solar Dorrego the one that took the organization ahead. In August of 1926, the committee summoned to a General Assembly that was carried out on Friday September 3 at the 17 hours in the social headquarters of the Jockey Club, located then in that in Florida 559.

The first point of the topics to try was the "Constitution of the Association Argentina of Golf, discussion and approval of the Statutes and Regulations of the same one and election of the Directive" Council. Given the importance of this meeting representatives of fifteen clubs attended:

Once constituted this new entity, the first Agenda was to establish its objectives:

  • To foment the game of the golf in the Republic Argentina, maintaining their true spirit of the game, according to the old and honorable traditions.
  • To adopt a regulation for fans, to watch over their execution and to interpret it.
  • To organize, to sponsor and to direct the annual Championships of Fans, Open,Interclubes of ladies and gentlemen, I eat any other tournament that considers also convenient.
  • To incline to that all the entities in that is practiced the golf game, affiliate to the Association.
  • To act as only national authority in the arbitration of controversies, solving all question related with the golf game definitively in the country that can be raised

Very soon the AAG adopted the code of rules of St. Andrews, it established an uniform system of handicap, and it adopted the system "standard scratch scores", avoiding this way the existence of faulty courts in that referred to longitudes.

At the moment the affiliated entities are 243 (they include 27 courts of even 3). The AAG administers the handicap of 43.494 players in the whole country and it drives more than 30 official competitions, among those that stand out already the championships centennials, as the Argentinean of Fans and Fond, and the Argentineans of Interclubes in which participate more than 60 affiliated entities of different places of the country.

Also the Association Argentina of Golf grants its official patronage to five regional championships organized by the clubs headquarters. Those regional championships are:

  • Open of the Center, in the Córdoba Golf Club;
  • Open of the Coast, in the Rosario Golf Club;
    Open of the North, in the Jockey Club of Tucumán;
  • Open of the South, in the Mar del Plata Golf Club;
  • Opened Norpatagónico, in the Club of Golf Palihue.
