The origin of the word golf

There are several myths as regards the origin of the word "golf", and none of them has been either confirmed nor refuted so far. The most hilarious is the one that asserts that "golf" is actually an acronym that stands for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden".

Another somewhat more logical alternative, dates back to medieval times, amongst the Dutch and the Scots, before dictionaries were even invented, when there was no standard spelling and people would write words phonetically. The term " kolf " or " kolve ", in medieval Dutch would mean "club". It is believed that the word reached the Scots, who transformed it into " golve ", " gowl " or " gouf ".

Others maintain that "golf" is a purely Scottish word, derived from the terms " golf ", " golfand " and " golfing ", which mean "to strike ".

The truth is that, whatever the origin of this word, nowadays it conveys much more than a simple meaning. It locks the passion of men and women for this sport worldwide.
