General description

The landscape of the region is dominated by mountains covered with profuse vegetation. There stands out the coniferous presence of a gigantic one: the Larch or Lahuán.

The existence of the densest and old forests in the species in Argentina, they gave the name and the fame to this Park. The numerous present lakes, constitute an extraordinary natural mark of singular beauty.

The blue-silver color of the waters of the Lake Futalaufquen makes of the same one one of the main reasons of attraction. Uniting this body of water with the small Green Lake, is the River Arrayanes, of about 3 kilometers of longitude and about 50 meters wide their waters are of a transparent green-blued color, being sighted with incredible clarity their stony channel.

Their name is due to that its margins are densely covered with trees and leafy bushes, standing out the Arrayán for their snowy flowers and gnarled trunks of color cinnamon.

The Green Lake is as long as wide, and has some 2 Km2 of surface. Its north hillside, of 500 meters high, is covered for forests of Coihues, the Westerner on the other hand, is less high and allows for a short path the access to the banks of the Lake Menéndez.

This is one of those of bigger magnificence of the Park, due to the attractive natural scenarios that it exhibits, as the Hill Torresillas and the Cascade The Swan. Together with the lakes Futalaufquen and the Rivadavia, they represent the most important attractiveness in the Park. The Park preserves the basin of the River Futaleufú or Big whose are flooded they pour in the Ocean Pacific.

It conforms, also, the biggest supplying source in water of the area, assuring the good operation of the Hydroelectric Power station Futaleufú that supplies from energy to the factory of aluminum ALUAR, located in the coastal city of Port Madryn. Accompanying the main vegetable main character of the Park, the Larch, an abundant and varied native vegetation prospers. In the riverbanks of the lakes trees like the Radales grow, Maitenes, Cypresses, Arrayanes, Ñires, Lengas, Maquis, etc. That profusion of greens is tinged with the orange flowers of the Mutisia, the red and hanging of the Chilco, the liláceas of the Virreina and the yellow of the Liuto or Amancay.
