Located in a wide expansion of the valley, to the foot of the hills and in front of the fork of the rivers Santa María and Calchaquí, in prehispanic times shared with Tolombón an important indigenous concentration where they settled, before and after the wars calchaquíes, missions Jesuit and Franciscans.

At the end of the XVIII century the mission of Cafayate passed to depend on San Carlos' viceparroquia and in 1808 San Carlos' priest built a small chapel in the place that today occupies the Municipality, but the lands where the chapel had risen they belonged to doña Josefa Antonia Frías de Aramburu who in 1828 it donated them so that the town was built that was traced in 1840.

The nine original apples extended and, toward century ends, the city had near 2.000 inhabitants and era the second in importance of the province. Today, due to the I tight-lie relative of the valleys in front of the general growth of the province, Cafayate occupies the sixteenth place according to the quantity of population. But, when being to the margin of the explosive growth of other urban centers, has been able to maintain much and valuable construction finisecular and an attractive atmosphere for the tourism, initially summer, salteño and tucumano, and that today it gathers during the whole year to travelers international and a lot of youth.

The annual party is the Serenade Cafayateña (it is usually organized the following weekend to the Carnival), it is the most important folkloric encounter in the province of Salta, with participation of figures of national fame.
