Trekking in the Waterfalls of the Iguazú

Without a doubt is the beautiful girl of the province of Missions and some of the first more imposing natural attractiveness of the Argentina and for that not to say, of America . Together with the National Park Nahuel Huapi in the Patagonia , is one you the places more frequented by the tourists.

In Guarani, the one finishes Iguazú it is translated as "you Dilute big". they were discovered in the year 1541 by the early Alvar Núñez Head of Cow. In 1984, the UNESCO declared them as the humanity's natural patrimony.

Located inside the National Park Iguazú, to some almost 20 Km . of the city Port Iguazú to the north of the county, shares its jumps with Brazil . In this neighboring country, the river is born in the state of Paraná. After traveling about 1200 kms. for a plateau, absorbing the flow of the tributaries that meets in their road, arrives to a point where a flaw geologic form a crack in the plain. As if a giant shovel had collapsed in the earth separating its sides.

Alone that in this cut, it coincides with the step of a river.

A river that comes traveling a calm geography, without too many frights that little by little finds in their to traffic, a seguidilla of jumps. And suddenly 80 mts. of difference they transform it into a violent sensation of vertigo. The devil's throat, a Russian mountain in their biggest descent, combined with a constant one to thunder deafening that submerges in the deepest in the asphyxia, it stops then gently, to end to few kilometers in the river Paraná

One of the several legends bill of the existence of a giant snake "Boi", which lived inside the river. To appease their ferocity, the aboriginal ones once per year they sacrificed a lady throwing it to the waters like offering toward the beast. In one of those offerings a Guarani brave abducted the elected maiden to save her of the traditional rite, escaping in canoe for the river.

Boi when finding out the audacity enters in cholera and bending its loin left the course of the river, creating this way the waterfalls and this way it separated both natives.

Traveling the gangplanks

The visitor will find more than 270 jumps along the cliffs and islands, distributed in a half moon that forms this geographical accident.

From the center of visitors, the paths can be traveled on foot otherwise you can opt for a picturesque train to combustion to gas.

Basically can know it through two circuits. One inferior and another superior.

In the inferior you arrives to the base of the jumps, the force of the water become dew or vapor finishes wetting the attendees. But the experience is only, it is worthwhile to cheer up to the adventure. Also from this circuit it can take a boat going to the island San Martin.

In the superior, the walk is more sedentary. See panoramic from the gangplanks and the miradors make of the demurrage an unforgettable experience.

Inside the attractiveness of the park, for those that enjoy the tourism it risks, you can consent to a series of having traveled a little more active.

Beyond the jumps and cascades already mentioned, the forest proposes a series of alternative different. A more humid and a little fresher environment makes him to be favorable for the development and growth of a wide flora variety and fauna. The natural balance makes that it finds a the high quantity of foods, for consequence the fauna is also very varied. Almost 500 species of birds, around 80 of mammals, a great variety of reptiles, fish, insects and butterflies inhabit this ecosystem.

To few meters of the center of investigations is the Path MACUCO.

Pedestrian path that crosses the thick forest of about 3 kilometers long with diverse grades of difficulty. The walk one can make in form matter and it demands 2 hours. At the end of the path we will meet with the jump Arrechea.

A private lender offers an alternative a little more audacious. Leaving in a motive 4x4 overdraft will travel about 8 Kms. inside the forest, to arrive beside the inferior river.

Gomones semirígidos with potent motors outside of overboard will be waiting for us to overcome the river. Jumping and drawing the rapids will arrive to the I tweeted of the jumps and this way to make the baptism of the Waterfalls of the Iguazú. The prow of these semirígidos will come closer to such a point of almost to enter inside the curtain of the cascades.

In turn also you can approach a gomón to oar in the superior Iguazú, which will allow us to observe the flora and the fauna that it forms this delta more attentively. With some luck will be able to sight turtles of water and yacarés sunbathing in the coast.

The area where Iguazú Falls are situated is an environment which is humid, with average temperatures of 15º C in Winter and 30º C in Summer. Due to this fact, it is not advisable to take electronic elements such as video cameras or digital cameras since both, the climate and the falls spray can be harmful for these appliances.

The undisputed protagonist of the area is Iguazú River which is 1300 kilometers long until its outlet in Paraná River located 23 kilometers ahead of the spectacle that amazes tourists.

We advise you to be careful as you go along footbridges, especially when they have humid uneven platforms - they can be slippery.

Wanting to walk and to connect with the environment, we were fascinated with "Garganta del Diablo"- the biggest fall which pours 3 million cubic meters per minute forming fresh fumaroles of dew and vapour which can sometimes be seen from a 5 kilometer-distance.

We also went through the upper circuit where we admired the legendary falls called San Martín, El Escondido, Dos Mosqueteros, Rivadavia, Peñón, Mitre, Mbigua, Dos Hermanas , Chico Alférez, Bernabé Méndez and Bossetti, with hights ranging from 40 to 80 meters and where an eternal dew depicts a rainbow of exquisite contrast with the scenery.

It is important to highlight that Bernabé Méndez Fall was named after a Forest Ranger who was killed by poacher hunters in High Iguazú in 1968 when he was defending the Natural Patrimony of Humanity.

From vantage points, one can observe San Martín Isle and part of Brazilian Falls .

After a while contemplating, we carefully went down to the footbridges at the bottom to sharpen our senses- this time from a different perspective. Thus, we found Álvar Núñez and Lanusse Falls .

As one finishes the tour, one can cross Iguazú River in a boat to San Martín Isle or go on different boat excursions in front of the waterfalls.

The San martin Island

In San Martín Isle, located in the very heart of the park, one can be in contact with exuberant forest vegetation full of tree ferns, palm trees, orchids, air carnations and palo rosa- the last considered National Monument. From there, you get a spectacular view of San Martín Fall and de La Ventana Rock , a considerable rock formation located in between the falls.

Boat excursions deserve a special chapter since, in them adrenalin, speed and water get together to launch gusts of dizziness.

Along the tour, we come across coaties, tapirs, guinea pigs, capybaras, parrots, hummingbirds, tucans, butterflies and a great amount of alligators and lizards that make up the rich fauna of the region.

In short, Iguazú is a very particular environment. Not in vain Facundo Quiroga was inspired by these Argentinean corners to write their "Stories of the Forest ."
